Hercules Battling Centaur Nessus Statue
$205.00
Hercules’ fight with the centaur Nessus happened long after he completed his famous Twelve Labors. At Calydonia, Hercules married his third mortal wife, Deianeira, daughter of King Oeneus. During a feast, Hercules accidentally struck and killed the king’s young cup-bearer while washing his hands. Though it was an accident and the king pardoned him, Hercules felt guilty and chose to go into voluntary exile.
He, Deianeira, and their young son Hyllus set out for the city of Thrachis, needing to cross the Evenus River. Hercules could ford the river himself, possibly carrying Hyllus, but they hired the centaur Nessus to carry Deianeira across. However, Nessus was a treacherous centaur. Midway across the river, he tried to assault Deianeira. Hearing her screams, Hercules shot him with a poisoned arrow from the riverbank, ending Nessus’ attack.
